ENFinally, I took my courage in both hands and I went to the local Zoo. Why did I need courage for that, you might ask? Because seeing the captive animals living there, an enormous feeling of depression is taking over me. And not only me. I went there with a friend of mine, Micah, an American Peace Corps volunteer, and he had the same feeling, too.
Turda's Zoo came into being in 1953 and occupies 2,7 ha (6,67 acre). Although the area seems large enough for the few animals that live there, the rough accommodation is more than obvious. That's the reason why, a national newspaper listed Turda's Zoo among the other Romanian's Zoo that people won't like to visit again. Anyway, if you type "Zoo Turda" on the Romanian Google you'll find many critical articles about the severe affliction animals suffer there.
It's more than a year since the director promised that the place will be rebuild from zero due to the European's funds the local Zoo get. But nothing yet. Lions and bears still live in small paved cages, all rusted, with no grass but a pool with a rather green-brownish water. Because of the narrow space, they lie dormant all day long. During my last visit, years ago, I remember I saw one of the two bears holding the bars of the cage with his paws while he swang his whole body. This image remind me of the first TV shoots right after the Revolution with the children from the communist's orphanages. They were holding the bars of their cribs and swang their body nervously. The specialists explained that specific motion as a result of the yearlong time spent only in bed, sometimes tied up. It' really depressing. I wonder if these animals will ever be able to accommodate in a larger space, after years of captivity. The baboon looks very sad being lonely for too long, the wolfs are no more wild, they look rather daunted, the foxes looks torpid and the lonely puma wobbles.

A better accommodation enjoy the deers, llamas, goat or the ostrich. They dwell in a larger area with grass.

Even though Romanian's Law of the Zoological Gardens stipulates that on Zoo's area are admitted only animals from world's fauna, in Turda's Zoo you'll find lots of Labradors. Why are there? Because the director, vet as profession, breeds them for money. Every time visitors come over, these adorable and very friendly dogs start crying for affection. One of the lab has an infection on both ears, with fly on it. Horrible. Poor dog.

You can see the animals from our local Zoo in the next shoots. Some of them are hard to be recognize because of the cage's bars, but clicking on the picture you'll see it larger.

I leave the comments on you. My heart is crying.
Alhough I don't want to end my post in a depressing tone, I'd like to share with you a joke that my friend Micah made after he saw so many empty cages. He felt that he has to repopulate it with a new species, called: Homo Sapiens Bestia.
Here it is:

  2. That sounds really sad and most distressing! No wonder you are depressed! Those lion enclosures are TOTALLY unacceptable! NO animal is meant to be alone either. I feel so heartbroken for the baboon, since they are social creatures. In the wild they are extremely active and hang around with large troops.
Whilst I agree with the concepts of captive animals - for education, research and promoting the greater conservation idea, I agree that some conditions are horrific and should be stopped.
Quite frankly, when I see this, I feel that it is better for some of those wild animals to be euthanased!
Years in captive conditions like that make them totally un-rehabilitatable!
Good luck with all your endeavours. You are far braver than me.

  6. Dear MAX, You live closer to wild animals than any of us and you must understand better why is a real affliction what the animals from our Zoo endure. I plan to open an educational farm for children, but first of all I'm thinking of their good. My believe is that without having joyful animals around, the educational aspect can't be a real success.
I believe in what I do, even if some friends criticize me.

Eu in tineri ca tine imi pun speranta pt a reusi sa schimbam ceva, in Romania, pentru animale.
